How to properly store a fur coat during warm months

Why is proper storage important?

Fur is a living material that reacts to temperature, humidity and light. Improper storage can lead to damage, loss of shine, fading or even decomposition of the leather.

How to store — step by step

  1. Clean the coat. Before storage have the coat professionally cleaned or at least thoroughly brushed and aired for 24 hours. Dirt and sweat can damage fur during storage and attract pests.
  2. Choose the right hanger. Use a wide, padded hanger. The coat must hang freely, not be squeezed.
  3. Use a fabric cover. Cover the coat with a breathable cotton or linen bag. NEVER use plastic covers!
    • Cotton bag breathes and protects from dust
    • Leave enough room so the coat is not squeezed
  4. Pick the right place. Store in a cool, dark and dry wardrobe.
    ✓ Good places
    • Air-conditioned wardrobe
    • Cool dressing room
    • Cellar (if dry)
    ✗ Bad places
    • Attic (hot)
    • Damp cellar
    • Near a window (sun)
  5. Check regularly. Once a month take the coat out, shake it and air it for 1–2 hours. Check it is not damp or holding any smell.

Pest protection

Moths and other insects can cause significant damage to fur.

  • Natural repellents. Lavender sachets, cedar wood or special fur repellents. Place them in the coat pockets.
  • Cleanliness. A clean coat without sweat smell is less attractive to insects.
  • Do not use mothballs. Mothballs leave a strong odour that is hard to remove.

Professional storage

Some specialised furriers offer professional storage in climate-controlled facilities with ideal conditions.

Benefits: perfect temperature and humidity, regular airing, insurance, professional care. Suitable for very expensive coats.
